Avila Building

Once the location of a restaurant called Pedro Weisnewski's, this vacant building was renovated in 2001 by the Avila family.  The SDBA provided matching grants and architectural assistance for this complete historic renovation.  The building now houses the Southwest Community Policing Office, Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service, and a residential tenant upstairs.  Total project cost: $275,000.

Comcast Building

This unassuming storefront underwent dramatic changes in 1997.  Underutilized as a storage space for many years, the owner decided to repaint the facade.  As the painters started putting up the first coat of bright white paint, the SDBA brought over its architect and convinced the painters to use a multi-colored palette to bring out the hidden brick detail.  Shortly after the painting was complete, workers knocked out the front wall to install large windows and a new doorway, following the example of SDBA's building just across the street.  It is now the home to a Comcast Communications office.

El Nacimiento Restaurant

In 2000, D&L Hardware moved from this location to a new site on West Vernor Highway, to accommodate its growing business.  The Padilla family purchased the building for a new taqueria restaurant.  The SDBA worked with the new owners by providing a matching grant, architectural designs, and project management assistance.  The new storefront included new windows, awnings, brickwork, and signage.  The 6,000 square foot restaurant is now a bustling business, one of fifteen new taquerias to open in the community in the past three years.  Total project cost: $170,000.
