COMPAS
The soul of any community is revealed by its commitment to the arts. Over the last decade the SDBA has spearheaded a range of community development efforts that have expanded its scope into the arts.
The COMPAS program began in the winter of 2007 as a collaboration between performing artists in the community, and the SDBA. This group of highly talented and motivated people worked to define the creative needs, & programming of the organization, as the SDBA worked to create a solid business model and secure funding. The unlikely duo created COMPAS, The Center for Music and Performing Arts- Southwest, serving more than 400 students a season.
Specifically, the SDBA has provided youth-based arts and recreational opportunities through the incubation of a performance arts center. Programming takes place in a professional quality studio and practice performance areas in the restored Odd Fellows Building. The COMPAS initiative offers 60% Latino programming. As a project of the SDBA, COMPAS is committed to the mission of enriching the community through the arts and is supported in part by the McGregor Fund and Skillman Foundation.
