Detroit, MI – On November 11, 2004, the DTE Energy Foundation announced its “Achieving Excellence Awards” honorees during a reception at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit. The awards, in their second year, recognize best practices in nonprofit organizations in the three areas: collaboration, leadership and sustainability.  The DTE Energy Foundation awarded five Michigan nonprofits Achieving Excellence Awards totaling $300,000.

The SDBA was recognized for its collaboration with other agencies to resolve land-use, transportation and traffic issues in Southwest Detroit.  Selected in the collaboration category, the SDBA was awarded $75,000 to support this work.

The DTE Energy Foundation is proud to honor SDBA for the excellence they have demonstrated in achieving their goals,” said Anthony F. Earley, Chairman and CEO of DTE Energy.  “SDBA plays a critical role in developing the human and economic potential of the community they serve, and they truly deserve our thanks and recognition for a job well done.”

“This award highlights the significant impact transportation has on our community, and how important it is that we work together to bring the community to the table as an equal.  DTE Energy is a leader by being among the first to support this complex, long-term initiative,” adds Kathleen Wendler, President of the Southwest Detroit Business Association.

Other 2004 honorees were the Community Foundation of the Upper Peninsula, Michigan Nonprofit Association, New Detroit Science Center, and the Inland Seas Education Association.

Established in 1957, the Southwest Detroit Business Association fosters innovation, drive and commitment to create a healthy, vibrant Southwest Detroit.  The SDBA works with its members, local businesses, property owners, residents, and other community leadership to attract and strengthen investment in Southwest Detroit, and to achieve the vision of this diverse and growing community.
