Shop Your Block Returns July 30, 31 and August 1!

Shop Your Block returns the weekend of July 30th, 2010!   The 24th Annual Sidewalk Event has been expanded to include Sunday August 1st.  Your commercial strip will be full of fun and savings as merchants line the sidewalks with tables of discounted goods and residents take part in the return of the “Cutest Baby under the Sun” contest.  Many discounts are centered on Back to School Savings with offerings ranging from discounted haircuts to make you the hit of the schoolyard to reduced priced school supplies to help you earn high marks.   Savings can be found on West Vernor from Clark Street to Woodmere, and on Springwells from West Vernor to I-75.  The official hours of the event are from noon to five pm, each day, but normal store hours apply.  A complete listing of discounts can be found on page 3.

Cinco de Mayo Highlighted with Opening of the Bagley Street Pedestrian Bridge

Cinco de Mayo marks not only an important day in the history of Mexican Culture, in
2010 it will mark an important day in the culture of Southwest Detroit! After nearly forty
years of being divided by I-75, Bagley Street will be reunited with a pedestrian bridge crossing. On May 5th, the Community is invited from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM to join in the festivities as the bridge opens for the first time.

There are many well-known establishments in the Southwest Detroit Mexican restaurant scene. Mexican Village, Los Galanes, Xochimilco’s, El Zocalo, Armando’s, to name a few. But say you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore cuisine off the beaten path consider two of Southwest Detroit’s lesser-known haunts: La Mexicana and La Barca.

On May 5th students, teachers and parents from Northville schools will be sharing Cinco de Mayo with their partner schools in Southwest Detroit. Maybury Elementary, Neinas Elementary and Bennett Elementary will all welcome the Northville students to take part in a day of celebration of the Mexican culture. The Southwest Detroit Business Association is helping to coordinate activities, along with the organizers of the Northville group.

1st Annual Southwest Detroit Lowrider Hop Enjoys the Sweet Smell of Success!
¡El 1er Brinco del Carro Achaparrado Anual del Suroeste de Detroit Gozó de la Dulce Fragancia del Éxito!

Over a thousand people attended the inaugural Lowrider Hop at Clark Park on Sunday, August 24th. Local musicians performed, and families picnicked on the beautiful summer day. Lucky participants won awards in 13 different categories including Best in Show. Competitors entered in 2 separate Hop contests to win a grand total of $1000.00. This family friendly event will be sure to become a summer favorite! Mark your calendars for the 2009 Southwest Detroit Lowrider Hop to be held on August 22, 2009.

Magglio Ordonez Visits Holy Redeemer to Announce his Family Scholarship Foundation
On Sunday, January 13, 2008, The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) welcomed hundreds of excited little league softball players, young Tiger fans and their parents as they crowded into the community center room at Holy Redeemer Church to get a glimpse of Magglio Ordonez. The Tiger baseball star was there to announce the establishment of a college scholarship for a deserving southwest Detroit high school senior. Established by Ordonez and his family and the Detroit Tigers Foundation, it is a permanent scholarship program of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
