COMPÁS PERFORMING CENTER DOUBLES ITS ENROLLMENT AND HIRES NEW COORDINATOR The corner of Lawndale and W. Vernor is a very lively place these days since COMPÁS, the Center of Music and Performing Arts – Southwest has doubled its enrollment! In view of its success, the organization has appointed Ismael Duran Galfano as its new coordinator. “We could not have found a better person to take this position,” said Kathy Wendler, president of Southwest Detroit Business Association, the sponsoring organization for COMPÁS. “His arts experience, along with his knowledge of Latino arts and a passion for this area are a perfect fit.” Duran has been a fixture in Southwest Detroit for many years where he has taught music at Cesar Chavez Academy Elementary School, held positions as Community Coordinator at Bagley Housing and Director of Holy Redeemer’s Cultural Center where he oversaw dance and music classes. A native of Chile, he attended the Universidad Tecnica del Estado/School of Arts and Crafts in Santiago and studied at the Alliance Francaise in Paris, France. Durant said there are still openings for some of the classes including Flamenco, Tango, Samba, Capoeira, Mexican Folkloric and African Dance.
