Celebrating Hispanic culture in Mexicantown

Hand-painted signs and vibrant colored murals found on buildings down Vernor Highway and Bagley Street, along with the smells of fresh tortillas, welcome you to Mexicantown on any given day.

Nestled between Clark Street to 16th Street and from approximately Fort Street to just north of West Vernor Highway, the tight-knit Southwest Detroit neighborhood has been celebrating Mexican culture since the 1920s.

Today, Mexicantown is thriving with shops, bakeries and authentic Mexican restaurants, helping to keep Hispanic pride alive in the community. According to City-Data.com, the population of Mexicantown as of 2008 was approximately 12,127, and over half the residents are Hispanic.
