Detroit Business Sued Over Blight

DETROIT -- The Southwest Detroit Business Association is suing the owners of an apartment complex after complaints that garbage has been piling up outside and inside its building.

According to the lawsuit, complaints from tenants and neighbors of the Barbara Apartments for things such as rats, cockroaches and bedbugs have not been addressed.

The lawsuit is asking the court to order a cleanup of the building or force its closure.

"We want to send the message that creating civil disorder, creating nuisances and lowering property values is just not acceptable, " said Matthew Bihun, a representative of the association.
